How to check where your Etsy listing ranks for a keyword
Shop Manager shows views and visits. It does not show the position your listing lands in when a buyer types a search term. To see that, you have to search the way a buyer does.
Why Shop Manager is not enough
Views tell you a listing was seen somewhere, on some page, for some search. They do not tell you whether it sat third on the first page for "personalized necklace" or was buried on page four. When you rewrite a title, swap a tag or drop the price, the question you actually want answered is whether the listing moved for the keyword you care about. Shop Manager cannot answer that. A buyer search can.
Check it by hand
- Open Etsy in a private or logged-out window, so your own purchase and browsing history do not shape what you see.
- Search the exact keyword a buyer would type, not a paraphrase of it.
- Scroll and count. Etsy marks sponsored results as "Ad"; count only the organic ones for your organic position, and note separately if the listing also shows as an ad.
- Keep going for up to three pages. Etsy shows roughly 64 results per page, so three pages covers close to 200 listings, which is as far as most buyers ever scroll.
- Write down the page, the position, and which three listings sit just above yours. That last part matters more than the number alone: it tells you who you are actually competing against for this keyword.
Why one check proves little
Etsy search results are not a fixed list. They shift with the buyer's location, their past searches, the time of day, and Etsy's own testing of ranking changes, and paid placements move around the organic ones. A single check is a snapshot, not a rank. It becomes useful only once you compare it against the same keyword checked on different days, ideally after changing one thing at a time so you can tell which edit moved the needle.
How Listrank does the check
- On any listing page, press Track this listing and add up to three keywords.
- Check rank now scans the first three pages of search results for that keyword, records your organic position or ad slot, and lists the three listings that sit just above you.
- The popup keeps a history per keyword, so a shift in position is something you can see, not something you have to remember.
- On Pro, every tracked keyword is checked once a day automatically, so the history builds itself.
Free covers 3 rank checks a day and 2 tracked listings, with the last 7 checks kept per keyword. Pro removes the daily cap, tracks up to 25 listings checked automatically every day, and keeps the full history.
What to do with the number
Pick one keyword you actually sell through, change one thing about the listing, and check again over the following days rather than minutes after the edit (Etsy's own indexing takes time to catch up). If the position improves and holds, the change helped. If it moves up and down with no clear pattern, the keyword is volatile for reasons outside your control, and any single reading was noise. A tracked history turns a guess into a trend, and the trend is what tells you whether an edit actually worked.
Read the whole page, not just your own listing
Your rank means more once you know what the rest of the page looks like: how many results are ads versus organic, what the median price is, and how many top sellers carry Etsy's own badges. That is the subject of the ads vs organic guide.
