How the tag rules work

Etsy lets a listing use up to 13 tags, each up to 20 characters, and a title up to 140 characters. A tag is not required to fill every one of the 13 slots, but an empty slot is a missed chance to match a search a buyer actually types, so this tool lists which slots are still open. A tag over 20 characters is not automatically rejected in Etsy's own editor in every case, but the safest assumption is that anything past character 20 is wasted or truncated, so this tool flags it rather than guessing what Etsy does with the overflow.

The other checks here are not Etsy-published rules, just practical hygiene: a duplicate tag, or a tag that only repeats a word already inside a longer tag (for example "necklace" next to "silver necklace"), spends a slot without covering new search terms. Tags starting with a hyphen or apostrophe, or containing symbols outside letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes, can behave unpredictably in Etsy's own tag matching, so they are flagged as invalid here. In the title, a keyword placed early is safer than one buried past character 40, since Etsy's search weighting and any front-end truncation both favor the start of a title, and a symbol like % or + repeated more than once usually signals a title that is trying to cram in extra listings' worth of keywords rather than describe the item.
