Etsy titles: the length limit, and what actually goes in it
A title has to do three jobs at once: match what a buyer typed, read clearly on a small screen, and set up the page title Google shows. Etsy's help center is specific about how to do all three in one line of text.
The length limit, and the shorter number that matters more
Etsy caps a listing title at 140 characters. That's the hard limit the form enforces. But Etsy's own guidance for writing one is a separate, shorter number: "Consider using less than 15 words when including the traits that make your item special." Most titles that use the full 140 characters run well past 15 words, which means the limit and the advice are pulling in different directions, and the advice is the one worth following.
There's a second reason 15 words matters more than 140 characters: Google only shows the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title in its own search results. Etsy's SEO guidance says to "include the most important traits upfront, like your item's colors, material, and size," specifically because anything past that point may never be seen off-Etsy at all.
What goes first
Etsy's guidance: "Clearly state what the item is and any key details." The item itself, not a shop name, a collection name, or a mood word, is what both a buyer scanning search results and Google's truncated preview need to see first. A title that opens with the maker's brand name pushes the actual product past the point most people ever read.
What to leave out
Etsy names three things a title doesn't need:
- Price and shipping. "There's no need to add information about price or shipping to your title." Those have their own fields, and Etsy's search shows them separately. If you're deciding what to charge in the first place, the pricing calculator works out a price from your costs and target profit, and the fee calculator shows what a given price nets after every fee, but neither belongs in the title text itself.
- Subjective words. Etsy calls these out directly: "Avoid repetition as well as subjective words (for example, 'perfect')." A word like "perfect," "amazing" or "beautiful" describes the seller's opinion, not the item, and it doesn't match anything a buyer types into search.
- Occasion or recipient words that aren't essential. "Only include holidays, special occasions, or recipient types if they're essential to what the item is (for example, 'Halloween costume')." A costume needs "Halloween" in the title; a plain ceramic mug does not need "gift for mom" crammed in just because it could be given as one.
Repetition is its own failure mode even without a banned word. A title that says "necklace" three times to cover three different phrases spends 30-plus characters restating one word instead of covering three separate searches.
A before/after rewrite
Before, 135 characters and 20 words, under the 140-character limit but well past Etsy's 15-word guidance and full of what it says to avoid:
Luna Designs Perfect Beautiful Handmade Sterling Silver Necklace Necklace for Her, Amazing Gift for Mom, Birthday Necklace, Buy Now $28
After, 71 characters and 9 words:
Sterling Silver Necklace, Personalized Birthstone Pendant, Gift for Mom
The rewrite drops the shop name from the front, cuts "perfect," "beautiful" and "amazing," removes the price, and stops repeating "necklace." What's left states the item first, uses two distinct descriptive phrases instead of one phrase said twice, and keeps the one occasion word ("gift for mom") that's actually a common search rather than filler. At 71 characters it also fits inside what Google will actually display.
Checking a title
The tag checker flags a title over 140 characters and shows exactly where a chosen keyword sits in it, marking anything past character 40 as buried. Paste a draft title in before publishing it, not after, since Etsy's search visibility page only surfaces a title problem once the listing is already live and has already been judged against it.
