How Etsy search ranks listings
Etsy doesn't publish a formula, but its help center is specific about what sellers control. One article puts it in a single line: sellers control the most important factors in Etsy search placement, and names four of them. Here is each one, what it means in practice, and what to actually do about it.
1. Matching the shopper's query
Etsy search starts by matching what a shopper typed against a listing's title, tags, category and attributes. A listing that never contains the words a buyer searches cannot be matched to that search, no matter how good it otherwise is. Etsy's tags article puts it directly: a tag is "a word or short phrase that describes your item," and each one is "an opportunity to be matched with a shopper's search."
What to do: use every one of the 13 tag slots, and use tags that are phrases a buyer would actually type, not maker language. Put the item itself early in the title, and fill in every attribute Etsy offers for the category, since attributes match search filters that tags and titles don't cover. The tags guide and the titles guide go through this in detail.
Where Listrank helps: the tag checker flags empty tag slots and titles that bury the keyword past character 40. The shop audit does the same across an entire CSV export at once.
2. Listing quality
Etsy's search visibility page lists the specific checks an active listing needs to pass for "a chance to receive priority placement" in relevant results: at least one image, a high-resolution primary photo (Etsy recommends 2000 pixels or more in width and height), a primary photo that shows one finished product rather than a collage, a category set as specific as possible, and a return policy on file, even if that policy is "No returns." For US listings, Etsy also states that domestic shipping under $6 gets priority.
What to do: open Shop Manager's Listings page and filter by search-visibility issues; it names each listing that fails one of these checks. Etsy says the warning typically clears within 24 hours of a fix. If US domestic shipping is a lever you can pull, the fee calculator shows what raising or folding shipping into the price actually costs you in fees before you decide.
Where Listrank helps: nothing here needs an extension, since this is entirely inside Shop Manager. Listrank's panel does show a listing's current price and shipping alongside the top ten results for a keyword, so you can see how your shipping compares before Etsy's own dashboard flags it.
3. Your shop, not just the listing
Etsy also weighs the shop as a whole. Its help center states plainly that a shop without a logo can lose visibility, since a complete shop "can boost buyer trust."
What to do: add a shop logo if one is missing. It's a five-minute fix Etsy explicitly calls out as a visibility factor, not a cosmetic one.
4. Customer service standards
The fourth factor Etsy names is customer service, and the search visibility page lists what it measures: responding to buyer messages in a timely manner, shipping orders on time and with tracking, maintaining a positive review score, and avoiding a high number of cases opened against the shop. Etsy states that meeting these standards "can help you avoid lower visibility in Etsy search," and that repeat violations can lead to a temporary or permanent suspension of selling privileges. Sellers who go beyond the minimums can earn Etsy's Star Seller badge instead.
What to do: check Shop Manager's Customer service stats page, which shows exactly where a shop stands against each of the four measures and flags what needs attention.
What isn't a ranking factor Etsy states directly
Price is a common guess, and it does matter to buyers looking at a results page, but Etsy does not list price as a stated search-ranking input the way it lists the four factors above. It shows up indirectly: a listing priced well outside what similar listings on the same page charge gets fewer clicks even at the same rank, and fewer clicks over time can feed back into a lower quality score. The listing-not-showing checklist covers this alongside the other checks worth running in order.
How Listrank helps across all four
On any Etsy search page, Listrank labels every result with its organic rank or ad slot, shop rating, review count and price, so you can see which of the listings above yours are winning on query match, quality signals, or just an ad slot they paid for. On a listing page, the panel tracks your rank for up to three keywords over time and compares your listing with the top ten results, showing the gaps in price, reviews and rating side by side. The free shop audit checks tags and title length across a whole CSV export, no install required.
