Etsy listing renewals: the fee, automatic vs manual, and rank

Every renewal costs $0.20 USD, sold or not. Here is what a renewal changes, how automatic and manual renewal differ, and what Etsy does and does not say about renewing for search.

The short answer

• A renewal costs $0.20 USD, charged to your Payment account each time.
• A listing "expires after 4 months". Renewing starts a new 4-month period.
• New listings "are set to renew automatically when they expire by default." You can switch to manual.
• None of the Etsy help center articles we read on renewals, fees or search say that renewing improves search placement.

What a renewal does

Etsy's renewal article: the fee "will give it a new listing date and a new expiration date (4 months from the renewal date), the renewed listing will still keep its original view count, number of favorites, and web address." A sold or expired listing can be sold again by renewing it.

At $0.20 every 4 months, a listing that never sells costs $0.60 a year to keep live. For 100 such listings that is $60 a year. Editing a listing is free: "There is no fee for editing a listing."

Automatic renewal

• The fee is charged when the listing is auto-renewed, and the 4-month period "starts over."
• A multi-quantity listing renews automatically when part of the quantity sells and some is left, and you pay the renewal fee.
• It keeps running during vacation mode: "your listings will still auto-renew if you've chosen this option."
• If a sold item has variations, each option's quantity is set to 1 on renewal. Check quantities after a renewal.

Manual renewal

A listing that is not set to renew and does not sell "expires." To renew by hand, go to Shop Manager, then Listings, check the listings and choose Renew. You can also use the gear icon beside an item or the renew option on its listing page.

To change the setting on one listing, open Listing Details and find Renewal options. For several at once, check the listings, choose Editing options, then Change renewal options, and select Automatic or Manual. Etsy warns that automatic is the default on new listings, so check the ones you want to renew yourself.

Find expiry dates under Listings, Active, and sort by expiration date. In Account settings, Emails, tick "My listings are about to expire" for a reminder when items expire within seven days. Deactivating a listing does not pause the clock: "Deactivating a listing doesn't affect its four month listing period."

Does renewing help ranking?

We found no Etsy statement to that effect. The renewal article lists three effects: a new listing date, a new expiration date, and the old views, favorites and web address kept. When Etsy names what sellers control in search, the list is "tags and titles, attributes, quality, and customer service." Renewal is not on it.

So a renewal is a fee that keeps a listing live. Renewing early to try to rank higher costs $0.20 a time, and Etsy gives no reason to expect a return. Testing it yourself

If you want evidence for your own shop, track one listing for up to three keywords with Listrank before you renew it, then again in the days after. Etsy warns that "search results are unique to the shopper searching on Etsy", so treat one reading as a signal, not proof, and change only the renewal.
